We are frequently asked why we offer some of our classes on a donation basis and if there is a suggested minimum amount.  The act of selfless giving is an important part of the traditions of self exploration such as yoga, meditation, and spiritual studies.  Knowing that we are making a conscious choice to give something that is ours to someone else helps us grow as people.  It requires us to recognize the value of what is being given and the selfless act of your own generosity.  In the end, we all win.

The Sanskrit word for generosity is Dana and its practice is a recognized path to happiness.  Through the practice of Dana we cultivate compassion and self-awareness.    By pausing for a moment and considering what you want to give and why, you help discover the spirit of generosity in yourself.  The practice of true generosity is powerful in many ways.  For one thing, abundance is attracted to generosity.  MahaLakshmi, the divine personification of abundance, is attracted to those who use her gifts wisely rather then for their own endless list of personal desires.  Our own true generosity does not deplete our resources but rather makes them grow.  True generosity opens your heart and quiets your mind.

Donation does not mean free and since many have asked if there is a suggested donation it may be helpful to know that similar facilities suggest a donation of $12 to $15 dollars.  The revenue from classes is a large part of the operating revenue of the studio.  It costs a great deal to create, maintain, and operate a beautiful “green” facility in Santa Monica such as ours.  In addition, our teachers have devoted years to their training and some have years of teaching experience.  They rely on the money they receive to support themselves so they can continue teaching.  Single classes at other yoga studios in the area are as much as $22 a class and large class packages often don’t reduce the per class cost to less then the suggested donation.  If you are fortunate and can give more please be generous so those that are not so fortunate can also attend classes in a beautiful, healthy environment giving only what they can afford.  Remember, if you donate the same amount you will spend on a latte or bottle of water, you are placing the that same value on the studio and teacher as well as your own generosity.  In the end, we suggest you give as much as it takes for you to feel generous.  This is uplifting for you and essential to Home-Simply Yoga so it can continue to offer its teachings.  Any amount of Dana that you are able to offer is warmly received with gratitude and appreciation.

MahaLakshmi, the goodess of light, beauty, and good fortune does not reside long with anyone who deisres her only for wealth.  It is rather by our generosity that we gain her favor.
