Beginners Course

Beginners Courses are designed to provide beginners with an introduction to Ashtanga yoga and focus on the development of a self practice. In these courses, the student will learn the order of the sequence of postures by heart and how to link them with the Ashtanga yoga breathing technique. Courses are designed to get students in the habit of practicing yoga at least three times per week by providing an initial introduction to the method, philosophy and practice of Ashtanga yoga.

Mysore Ashtanga Classes

These classes are taught in the method used by Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.  In these classes, students practice a set sequence of postures that has been taught to them individually, rather than being led through the practice as a group.  The teacher is free to assist, adjust, and teach new postures to individual students as needed.  By teaching individual students, instead of classes as a group, teachers gain an understanding of each individual’s needs and abilities.  This enables them to provide a physical practice that is appropriately challenging while still maintaining its therapeutic benefits.  Please note that Mysore style classes are not held on the New and Full Moon Days.

Led Ashtanga Classes

In led Ashtanga classes, students are taken through all or a part of the Ashtanga primary series as a group, including sun salutations, standing postures, some seated postures, and finishing postures. Variations for postures are also taught so that students can gradually cultivate correct alignment in a meditative, flowing practice in order to safely prepare for more difficult postures.

Level 1 Classes

These classes are appropriate for students of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels. They are designed to help beginning students experience the many benefits of yoga in a safe manner while learning the basics of yoga. No experience or flexibility is required. Focus is on the correct practice of postures within the limits of one’s own body. Props will be used along with appropriate modifications to insure appropriate challenges while maintaining the therapeutic benefits.

Level 1/2 Classes

These classes explore asanas (postures) with a non-aggressive approach and moderate pace. While more challenging then Level 1 classes, their tempo makes them appropriate for beginners while their emphasis on fundamentals can make them challenging enough for experienced practitioners.

All Level Classes

Moderately paced class appropriate for experienced Level 1 students through advanced students. These classes may incorporate vinyasa yoga (postures done in sequence) as well as attention to alignment and technique and tend to integrate asana, meditation, and breath work.  They are known to inspire personal transformation through their healing blend of empowering asana, philosophical depth, and compassionate awareness.

Specialty Classes

We also have classes that feature pranayama, mantra, mudra, or chanting while others such as seniors, pre-natal, or therapeutics focus on a particular demographic group.  Please see our schedule for more information on these classes.
